Applies to:

General Image Server 2000, SD and HD Maxx servers, TSS series

Symptom:

The server appears to boot properly but when the GUI launches, there are no channel windows and a message similar to “Server Unavailable” will appear in red at the bottom of the screen.

Possible Reason(s):

The most common reason is that the video board is not being seen by the software application.  This could be a hardware failure or on older systems, loose or dirty connections to the video board.

On older systems (Image Server and MAXX), another possible reason is that an invalid file with no name was placed on the server through FTP.   When the application receives a invalid file name it might not be able to launch properly.

Solution(s):

WARNING: Hazardous Voltage. Contact may cause electric shock, burn, or death. Disconnect all power from the unit prior to attempting any servicing of the equipment. Service should only be performed by qualified personnel.

Warning: Make sure to observer proper ESD precautions when handling internal components.  Failure to do so may damage the electronics within the system.

  1. With the power disconnected from the unit, remove the top cover to the server.
  2. Remove the screws holding the video board in place.
  3. Remove the video board and on systems with a riser card, remove the riser as well.
  4. Using a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol, clean the gold plated pci connections on the video board and riser.
  5. Re-seat the video board and check to make sure that all associated cables and power connectors are firmly attached.
  6. Re-install the top cover and test the unit.

If you believe a bad file may be on the system:

  1. Login though FTP and attempt to locate and remove the bad file.
  2. Attempt to access the local media and remove the file. CAUTION, incorrect use or deletion of the wrong files may cause the loss of data.
    • Open a terminal (CTRL-SHIFT-F12 on older systems, CTRL-ALT-t on TSS systems).
    • Navigate to the media directory. (cd /data/media)
    • look though the file listings and directories to see if a file with invalid characters in it exists.
    • Generally it is best to remove the offending file (rm <filename>) but it may be possible to rename or move the file elsewhere using the move command (mv oldfilename newfilename)
  3. If none of the above methods work, a full install of the software will wipe all content on the system.  Note that this process renders all content unrecoverable.
